National Weather Service urges caution as slushy snow could affect Thanksgiving travelers

The National Weather Service is urging careful driving this Thanksgiving as slushy snow is expected.

Meteorologist Kaitlyn Lardeo said the snow will start falling late Wednesday night and will continue to fall well into Thanksgiving.

“In parts of Central New York, they can see two to four inches up,” Lardeo said. “Higher elevations may see six inches or more.”

When asked what locals should do, Lardeo urged travelers to slow down and “take it easy.”

“It’s going to be muddy and slippery, so slow down as you normally would in winter conditions and know it’s on its way,” she said.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for northern and southern Oneida County and Madison County, saying in a statement: “We encourage everyone to keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially if you are traveling on vacation.”

Winter weather after Thanksgiving

Going into Black Friday, parts of the region north of Central New York will see lake effect snow Friday and through the weekend.

Areas like Syracuse could see temperatures in the 40s, while higher elevations could see temperatures in the 30s.
