Nations League: Leweling makes dream debut as Germany beats Netherlands | League of Nations

Jamie Leweling from Stuttgart enjoyed a dream Germany debut and scored the winner in their 1-0 win over the The Netherlands in the Nations League on Monday to secure his country’s place in the next round.

The 23-year-old had already put the ball in the net in the second minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside. He did better in the 64th, firing into the top corner after the Dutchman failed to clear a corner.

Before kick-off in Munich, Germany paid farewell tributes to Ilkay Gündogan, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos after their retirement from international football. A minute’s silence was also held in memory of Johan Neeskens and Dieter Burdenski after their recent deaths.

Germany had the visitors in the background from the start, creating chances for Tim Kleindienst and Maximilian Mittelstädt, while the Netherlands struggled to find any way into the match. The hosts came close with Serge Gnabry before Leweling slotted home the winner. The visitors, who were without Virgil van Dijk through suspension, failed to get a shot on target in the first period but improved after the break and both Xavi Simons and Donyell Malen had great chances in the closing stages to score a barely deserved to get a point.

“We won as a team. I scored, but we played a good game and I am happy that I helped,” said Leweling. “The Dutch are a big team. We let them run, we kept possession of the ball and took our chances to score.”

Germany top Group A3 with 10 points from four matches and are assured of a place in the next round, with the Netherlands five points behind in second place. In the same group, two goals from Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai led the way Hungary a 2-0 win Bosnia in Zenica to level with the Netherlands on five points.

Italy need at least one point from the two remaining matches to guarantee a place in the next round.

Italian striker Mateo Retegui broke the deadlock by firing a penalty into the top corner in the 41st minute, while Di Lorenzo headed the second from a Giacomo Raspadori free-kick after the break. Mohammad Abu Fani pulled a goal back for Israel straight from a corner, before Federico Dimarco set up Davide Frattesi for Italy’s third and Di Lorenzo sealed the win with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Daniel Maldini, son of the great Paolo, came on in the second half and made his debut for Italy.
