Nebraska coach Matt Rhule hands over play-calling duties to Dana Holgorsen

LINCOLN – Nebraska Football has a new playcaller: Dana Holgorsen.

NU coach Matt Rhule announced the change at his press conference on Monday. Holgorsen replaces Marcus Satterfield, who was the Husker playcaller for the 21 games of the Rhule era.

“It’s probably unique,” Rhule said. “But it’s what it takes. It’s the right thing.’

Rhule said he invited Holgorsen, the former West Virginia and Houston head coach, to the NU campus last week to assess the coaching staff and players. Holgorsen liked what he saw, and Rhule was impressed with Holgorsen’s offense when he competed against him.

Satterfield will remain on staff. Rhule said Satterfield “humbled himself” in being willing to continue coaching tight ends. When asked what went wrong with NU’s play calling for the first nine games, Rhule said the Huskers were “trying to do too many things” on offense, specifically trying to get too many different players the ball.

Holgorsen will also help Nebraska be more “aggressive” than Rhule would like – which is one of the reasons Rhule made this move.

Holgorsen won’t overhaul NU’s offense with three weeks to go, but he can adjust it to determine how to best maximize the talent NU has.

“You can’t come in and install the airstrike,” Rhule said. “…I think Coach Holgorsen can tailor his offense to our players.”
