Netflix just released a new series from one of the best minds in comedy of the modern era. That would be Mike Schur, producer and writer of The Office, co-creator of Parks and Recreation and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and most recently The Good Place.

Now Schur’s new show has arrived on Netflix, starring Good Place veteran Ted Danson. It’s called A Man on the Inside and features Danson as Charles, a retired professor recruited by a local PI to infiltrate a retirement community in an attempt to find a jewel thief hiding inside and stealing from the residents. The rest of the cast includes Always Sunny’s Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz, Lilah Richcreek Estrada and Sally Struthers.

The show is great and is rated as such. It currently has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, on par with Parks and Recreation’s 93%, and just below Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s 95% and The Good Place’s 97%. Again, Schur isn’t actually missing anything, and if he’s making a new series, it’s probably best to drop everything and run out and watch it. That’s exactly what you can do with A Man on the Inside, as it’s a Netflix offering that can be installed, which wasn’t true of his previous shows. I feel like the week-to-week has helped some of those, but I know a lot of people are using them just fine on streaming services now.

As you would expect, this is a typical mix of comedy with heart that characterizes all Schur productions. I’d say this one probably leans more towards the “heart” aspect, and it’s certainly not as high-minded a concept of the metaphysical and philosophical Good Place. But it’s excellent, and the main reason, of course, is star Ted Danson, who at 76 is still putting out great performance after great performance in comedies.

It seems like Netflix audiences knew they had to tune in when the show hit, as it debuted as the No. 1 series on the service, beating out Cobra Kai, which has held the top spot for a while now. My gut tells me that A Man on the Inside is about to deliver a similar performance to Nobody Want This, a comedy (starring The Good Place’s Kristen Bell) that stayed on the list for a long time and became renewed for season 2.

Is Man on the Inside trying to get renewed for season 2? It’s not listed as a miniseries, so that could be the plan. I haven’t finished it yet, so I don’t know if it ends on a cliffhanger or with room for more. We’ll see.
