Netflix’s top recurring show comes with high critical scores for season 2

One of Netflix’s favorite sleeper hits has returned in the form of The Diplomat, where season 2 just went live, and so far it’s rated better than season 1. We’ll see if that holds true for fans.

Season 2 of Diplomat currently has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a decent upgrade from Season 1’s 84%, albeit with fewer reviews so far, so we’ll see if it goes up or down. The previous season had an audience share of 54%, which honestly surprises me, as that’s pretty bad in the context of most shows, and I don’t really understand why people would hate it to that extent. Audience scores for season 2 have not yet been announced.

Perhaps the biggest problem with the second season is that it’s short, just six episodes compared to season 1’s eight, but that’s not due to any kind of budget cuts on Netflix, as showrunner Debora Cahn recently explained:

“It was my decision,” Cahn told TVLine, “(Netflix) wasn’t happy. They wanted the full eight….I was very tired. It was a time thing. It felt like there wasn’t enough time to turn eight of them. A lot had to be done in what seemed like a short time.”

Cahn ended up getting more time than she initially thought, but it was too late to change things to make it eight episodes by then.

I’d expect The Diplomat to hit No. 1 on Netflix’s top 10 list soon enough, but there’s no need to worry about how it’s doing in terms of viewership since Netflix already has it here two weeks before its release has announced that it has been renewed for a third season. , which moves the action to NYC instead of DC. I believe production will start soon, so maybe this time there will be less of a wait between seasons, and we’ll get eight full episodes, which seems likely after Netflix was “not happy” with six this time.

I’d put The Diplomat in the ‘Lincoln Lawyer’ tier of Netflix shows, a solid performer that doesn’t set any records, but decent quality and low cost and good viewership means it’s something they’d be happy to continue with indefinitely to go. And it was notable enough to earn Keri Russell a Best Actress nomination at the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes.

I’m excited to sit down and watch the new season, and see how things lead up to the storyline heading to New York next time. I will report back soon.
