New York City FC vs. Red Bulls in the MLS playoff today: Score, highlights

play

For the first time in their ten-year history of the Hudson River Derby, New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls will face off in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The 30th match of all time between these two clubs will be the biggest, with both teams coming off a first-round upset against higher-ranked clubs.

The seventh-seeded Red Bulls pulled off the second-biggest upset of the playoffs yet – first, of course, Atlanta United over Inter Miami – by eliminating defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew in straight games in Round 1 . RBNY Scored Goals The top three offensive players in the playoff series win, with designated players Emil Forsberg and Dante Vanzeir, as well as the team’s top scorer Lewis Morgan, each scoring a goal.

By making this season’s MLS Cup Playoffs, the Red Bulls extended the longest streak of active postseason appearances in North America’s major men’s professional sports leagues. RBNY has made the MLS playoffs in 15 consecutive seasons, which is more than MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers (12), NBA’s Boston Celtics (10) and NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs (nine) and NHL’s Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs (eight ).

Sixth-seeded New York City FC will head into the conference semi-finals against their arch-rivals after last season’s Supporters’ Shield winners FC Cincinnati crashed out of the play-offs. Alonso Martínez (16) and Santiago Rodríguez (13) were NYCFC’s top scorers during the 2024 season, each scoring goals in the team’s playoff opener, a 3–1 win over FC Cincinnati.

NYCFC will host Saturday’s playoff game at Citi Field because the club’s regular home, Yankee Stadium, already had a previously scheduled event: the “Shamrock Series” college football match between undefeated Army and Notre Dame in a game with major implications for the College Football Playoff.

With the Eastern Conference’s top three – Inter Miami, Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati – out of the playoffs, the door is open for an unexpected conference finalist, with the winner of NYCFC-RBNY facing Orlando City SC-Atlanta United state. winner of next week’s conference finals.
