Newsom declares emergency for 4 Southern California counties over airport, bridge fires

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties following airport and bridge fires in parts of Southern California.

The statement comes as the Airport Fire has burned more than 23,000 acres in Orange and Riverside Counties. In addition to the Airport Fire, the Bridge Fire has burned nearly 50,000 acres in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.

What does this mean? The state of emergency gives the state of California the green light to provide additional assistance and/or resources to help areas affected by the emergency. The state of emergency also activates the National Guard response.

In addition to the three fires, the Line Fire has devastated parts of San Bernardino County, particularly in the Highland area. Newsom declared a state of emergency for the areas affected by the Line Fire on Sept. 7.
