The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly adding a familiar name to their coaching staff.

Jourdan Rodrigue from The Athletic and ESPN’s Piet Thamel reported Sunday that head coach Sean McVay is hiring former NFL player and former Nebraska head coach Scott Frost. Thamel noted that the position is officially a senior football analyst, while Rodrigue said Frost “will help with various roles on the staff (including special teams where they have an opening).”

Rodrigue also explained that “this has been in the works for a few days” after Frost spent time with the Rams during training camp.

Frost is more closely associated with the college game, but he played five seasons in the NFL from 1998 to 2003 for the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although he played quarterback at the collegiate level at Nebraska, he was a defensive back during his NFL playing days.

He went into coaching after his NFL career, working his way up to offensive coordinator for Oregon, helping the Ducks to the College Football Playoff national championship game during the 2014 campaign.

His first head coaching job was at UCF beginning in the 2016 season. In his second year at the helm, he led the Knights to a 13-0 record and a Peach Bowl victory over Auburn.

Due to the immediate turnaround with an American Athletic Conference team, he seemed like an obvious addition to Nebraska when a coaching vacancy opened up for the 2018 season. After all, it was his alma mater, and he had already proven he could thrive in multiple roles in the college game.

Unfortunately for Frost and the Cornhuskers, things turned out differently.

He had 16 straight wins and 31 losses and was fired after three games during his fifth season in 2022. It was a disappointing stretch and overshadowed some of the impressive things he did at Oregon and UCF.

But he now gets another chance to make an impact in the coaching profession with a Rams team fresh off a playoff appearance. Los Angeles has high expectations again with McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford leading the charge, and Frost will certainly try to help out where he can.

The Rams open the 2024 season next Sunday with an away game against the Detroit Lions.
