The Minnesota Vikings received bad news about Christian Darrisaw’s left knee injury, suffered late in the first half of Thursday’s 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, tests revealed that Darrisaw will require season-ending surgery to repair his left knee.

The injury occurred with 35 seconds left in the second quarter when Darrisaw blocked a punt for Aaron Jones. Rams safety Jaylen McCollough fell on Darrisaw’s knee and he was helped to the locker room by members of the Minnesota medical staff.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters after the game that he had no update on Darrisaw, but the team kept its “fingers crossed that we get some positive news.”

Andreas Krammer of the Minnesota Star-Tribune noted that Darrisaw left the stadium on crutches.

This will mark the fourth time in four NFL seasons that Darrisaw has missed multiple games due to injury. As a rookie, he missed five games in 2021 due to a groin injury and ankle sprain, three games in 2022 due to a concussion and two games last year due to ankle and groin injuries.

Darrisaw entered the week ranked as the ninth-best offensive tackle based on ESPN’s run-block winning percentage. Minnesota’s offensive line ranked eighth overall in pass-block win percentage and 19th in run-block win percentage.

The loss of Darrisaw, who has started every game he has played since Week 6 of the 2021 season, leaves a huge void for the Vikings to fill. Sixth-round rookie Walter Rouse is the backup left tackle on the team’s official depth chart, but he has yet to appear in a game.

Veteran David Quessenberry played 25 offensive snaps on the season against the Rams. He has made 30 career starts and played in 74 games in his seven-year career. Minnesota will likely turn to him as the starting left tackle for now.

The Vikings have lost their last two games after starting the season 5-0. They have 10 days off before hosting the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday Night Football in Week 9 on November 3.
