NFL Week 1 2024: How to watch Sunday’s games and notable matchups

CNN

The 2024 NFL season started with a bang, with the Kansas City Chiefs beating the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 on opening night on Thursday and the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Green Bay Packers in Brazil on Friday.

But the rest of the opening weekend is filled with intrigue and question marks as teams embark on a new season.

Here’s what to watch for during Sunday’s Week 1 games of the 2024 NFL season.

During the NFL season, fans can watch games on television via CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, ABC and NFL Network. Games are also broadcast on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.

Streaming services NFL+, Sunday Ticket, DAZN, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN+, Amazon Prime and Netflix will also broadcast games.

Both the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts have reason to be hopeful as the new season begins.

For the Texans, last year’s team may have been the story of the season. Led by Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback C.J. Stroud, they reached the playoffs with a young roster that had more experience than they expected.

Thanks to Stroud’s historic debut season, the defensive prowess of first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans and the creativity of offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Houston surprised many opponents and finished atop the AFC South.

For the Colts, it was their own promising young QB, Anthony Richardson, who showed glimpses of what he could offer the franchise in his rookie season, which was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Richardson played in just four games last year, but his limited appearances underscored why he was such a promising prospect for the 2023 NFL Draft: His combination of dynamic running and a strong arm potentially make him a tough opponent for defenders.

Both also possess other offensive talent: In the offseason, the Texans acquired running back Joe Mixon and added wide receiver Stefon Diggs to their strong receiving core of Tank Dell and Nico Collins, while the Colts’ running back Jonathan Taylor could be in line for a big comeback season after two down years.

The Texans and Colts are two players in the AFC South who will be more in the spotlight than in the background this coming season, and Sunday’s game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis is of great importance to the division’s final standings.

Dallas Cowboys @ Cleveland Browns, 4:25pm ET

The Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns are two teams that enter the new NFL season with major question marks.

The Cowboys are under immense pressure following their stunning loss to the Green Bay Packers in last season’s NFC Wild Card game.

While Dallas has enjoyed consistent regular season success under head coach Mike McCarthy, it has failed to translate that into a significant run in the playoffs.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones is unlikely to be fobbed off by McCarthy again this time around in the playoffs. And with quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract expiring at the end of the season, this could be the last chance for this edition of “America’s Team.”

The roster still has plenty of other unknowns. While the Cowboys have retained wide receiver CeeDee Lamb after a drama-filled offseason, the running back position and offensive line depth could be problematic for Dallas.

For the Browns, it’s time for the team to show signs of progress.

The controversial acquisition of quarterback Deshaun Watson in 2022 was supposed to herald a new era for the team, but Watson struggled with poor form and injuries during his time in Ohio.

Last year, the team was strengthened by the return of Joe Flacco, but the franchise’s season ended in disappointment after a heavy loss to the Texans in the Wild Card round.

If Watson doesn’t get injured again, the Browns hope to go one step further this time around with a complete-looking roster. The team’s star player, Nick Chubb, will miss the beginning of the season as he recovers from a serious knee injury he suffered last season. But if he makes a full recovery, he could be a game-changer for Cleveland.

Under head coach Sean McVay, the Los Angeles Rams have been the epitome of consistency.

While this will be the first season without perennial All-Pro Aaron Donald, the Rams appear to be in good position for a successful season.

LA’s offense looks strong again – featuring quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver duo Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua and last season’s star running back Kyren Williams – while the defense has undergone a facelift, most notably with the draft of Florida State duo Jared Verse and Braden Fiske.

The Detroit Lions also have high expectations this season, a surprising feeling for many fans after so many years of disappointment.

But under the leadership of head coach Dan Campbell, the Lions have risen from the depths of despair to become one of the most exciting teams in the NFL.

For Detroit quarterback Jared Goff, this is a chance to prove L.A. wrong. He was the Rams’ first pick in the 2016 draft, but was traded in 2021 for Stafford and a slew of other picks.

Goff is backed by a host of dynamic offensive weapons. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is chief among them, while second-year players Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta are emerging stars at their respective positions.

After losing the NFC Championship game last season, the Lions enter the season with Super Bowl aspirations.
