There is a beautiful map on the National Hurricane Center website this morning.

There are no disturbances on the forecasters’ tropical outlook map and the message displayed reads: “No tropical cyclone activity is expected over the next seven days.”

Of course, anything can – and has – happened and conditions can change at any time, so Floridians should remain vigilant, especially until the official end of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season on November 30.

AccuWeather forecasters say there is a medium chance of a tropical depression or storm developing next week.

What became Hurricane Oscar this weekend, which hit Cuba and the Bahamas, has now dissipated across the open Atlantic Ocean, moving away from Florida and the US. The National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory on Oscar on Tuesday, October 22 at 2 p.m.

The next named storms of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season are Patty and Rafael.

Here is the latest advice from the NHC as of Wednesday, October 23 at 8 a.m.:

Is another tropical storm or hurricane heading towards Florida?

No, but AccuWeather meteorologists said there is a medium chance of tropical development in the Caribbean Sea next week.

“We suspect there will be another attempt to produce a tropical depression or tropical storm in the western Caribbean by the middle of next week,” said Bernie Rayno, AccuWeather’s chief on-air meteorologist.

Record warm waters that have fueled tropical development all season continue, especially in the Caribbean. Combine that with low chances of wind shear and you have conditions that support the development of tropical cyclones.

“A major storm or gyre could form again near the western Caribbean, which, considering warm waters and low wind shear, could favor new but slow development,” AccuWeather said.

“The track of any new tropical feature in the Caribbean will depend on where exactly it forms and on the overall strength and movement of non-tropical features further north over the United States and the western Atlantic Ocean,” AccuWeather said.

What else is there and how likely are they to get stronger?

As of 8 a.m., the National Hurricane Center could not detect any tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Basin, which consists of the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.

While there is nothing on the tropical outlook map, NHC forecasters said there are a few tropical waves, including one in the eastern Caribbean:

  • Central Atlantic Ocean: A tropical wave near 44W from 15N southward is moving westward at a speed of 27 km/h.
  • Eastern Caribbean: A tropical wave in the eastern Caribbean tropical wave near 62W, west of Dominica and Martinique, is moving westward at a speed of 18 to 27 km/h. Some showers occur on the northern Leeward Islands.

Who is likely to be affected?

Forecasters urge all residents to continue to monitor the tropics and always be prepared.

What is the weather forecast for Polk County this weekend?

The National Weather Service’s forecast for Polk County couldn’t be better, especially given local efforts to alleviate ongoing flooding in Lakeland. It won’t make the water move faster, but it won’t make the problem worse either.

Don’t expect any rain, except maybe a few short-lived, meandering showers. Temperatures will range from the low 60s to mid 80s.
