    Nick Saban Jokes About Caleb Downs on ‘College GameDay’

    Nick Saban has landed many big-name recruits during his time in Tuscaloosa. But few mean as much to him as hearing him talk means defensive back Caleb Downs.

    After a segment on “College GameDay” about Ohio State’s superstar defender — who came over from Alabama following Saban’s retirement after his true freshman season — the panel turned to Saban, who praised the star.

    “This guy is one of the most complete people I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching,” Saban said on the show. “He’s a great person. He’s a great student. He’s a phenomenal football player… His competitive IQ, how he reacts on the field and reacts instinctively, it’s up there with all-time players.”

    However, Saban had one problem with the defensive back. Luckily it was nothing on the field.

    “The one thing about Caleb Downs…I don’t know if I can trust him!”

    Saban said he tried to avoid swearing in team meetings last year as part of a “transition period”, and that he had about $500 in a swear jar (seems like the transition was quite slow).

    “Well, there’s about $500 in the pot, and I don’t know what happened to the money!” he exclaimed.

    According to Rece Davis, it was Downs and now-Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold who were responsible for the missing money, confirming Saban’s “suspicions.”
