Nicole Kidman’s latest project, The perfect coupledeviates from the source material in several ways, including one that takes influence from one of her most popular roles.

In the Netflix series, Eve Hewson plays a character named Amelia. In Elin Hilderbrand’s novel, however, the character is called Celeste. During the show’s red carpet premiere in Hollywood on September 4, showrunner Jenna Lamia said The Hollywood Reporter The change came about because Kidman, 57, played a character named Celeste on HBO’s Big little liesIt was one of many changes that 55-year-old Hilderbrand Lamia allowed to be implemented.

“It was a five-year development process for a variety of reasons, so it took a lot of different forms and it felt more like the book early on,” said Lamia, whose writing credits include: Good girls And Uncomfortable.told THR“And then this wonderful director Susanne Bier came along and her influence changed a number of things, and when we added the cast it changed a number of things.”

Some of the changes were as small as the name change. Lamia changed Celeste’s name to Amelia “just to avoid any possible confusion, a very small reason.”

Fans of Hildebrand’s novel may be disappointed with the changes, but the author told Lamia that she could make all the necessary adjustments to produce a great TV series.

“I wanted them to make the best television show possible, I wasn’t worried about how they would change the book,” she said THR. “I said to Jenna from the beginning, I don’t feel precious about this. People can read the book later or earlier; it’ll be a different experience because it’s a little bit different, they can see how they’ve changed it, and I just wanted it to be excellent television.”

Hildebrand also had a hand in the casting. During the series premiere, she told PEOPLE that Liev Schreiber was her top choice to play Kidman’s on-screen husband.

“I was a huge Ray Donovan fan, he’s one of my favorite actors. And I sent my wish to the showrunner,” she told PEOPLE. “And she said, ‘I don’t know.’ And then a couple weeks later, she said, ‘Elin, your wish could come true.’ And she didn’t say in terms of what, but I was hoping that’s what she was talking about.”

The perfect couple stars Kidman as Greer, a novelist whose perfect plans for her son’s wedding are disrupted when a body turns up on a beach the morning of the ceremony. Hewson’s Amelia is Greer’s future daughter-in-law. Billy Howle plays Greer’s son.

The film stars Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Jack Reynor, Ishaan Khatter and Isabelle Adjani.
