Niners WR Deebo Samuel ‘frustrated’ as he chased teammates after missed kick: ‘We’ll get over it’

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel picked off long snapper Taybor Pepper and made unintentional contact with kicker Jake Moody on Sunday after Moody missed a third field goal attempt against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In a twist of fate, Moody hit his final field goal attempt as time expired, vaulting the 49ers to a 23-20 victory over the Bucs in Week 10. At 5-4 they are now above .500 for the first time. since Week 1, but the win didn’t come without some serious tension between teammates.

Samuel told reporters after the game that he would “talk to Moody, and we’ll get over it,” explaining that his frustrations simply got the better of him with 3:09 left in the fourth quarter, after Moody’s third miss. The video shows Samuel barking and grabbing Pepper by the throat. As Pepper brushed away Samuel’s hand, Samuel Moody grazed before walking away. Pepper shouted and followed Samuel to the sideline before teammates intervened.

“I didn’t say anything crazy like that to him,” Samuel told The Athletic. “I was quite frustrated at the time, but he went out and won the game for us. It didn’t bother him, so we’ll move past it.”

Samuel later added that Moody “had a little dog in him” for hitting the game winner after such a tough day.

But Moody said there is no need for an apology from Samuel.

“It’s an emotional game, and things like that happen all the time,” Moody said. “You just get past it and we won, so that’s all that matters.

“There doesn’t need to be (an apology). … I’ve got to make those kicks at the end of the day, that’s all I’m focused on. I’m not worried about anything.”

Pepper also did his best to diffuse the situation and turn a potential negative into a positive.

“He told him to lock in, and we know what our job is,” Pepper said. ‘We’ve got ourselves. It’s hard to be a specialist, sometimes it’s feast or famine.

“As a young development specialist like Jake is… I don’t know how much better it gets than missing three straight games and having to step up and hit a game winner from almost 50 yards. I’m super proud of Jake.”
