November 11, 2024 – US election news

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez asked split-ticket voters on Instagram on Sunday to explain why they support both her, or another Democrat, and newly elected President Donald Trump.

The replies – some of which Ocasio-Cortez posted – mainly pointed to what users described as an overlapping political style, particularly their blunt attacks on the political establishment.

“You’re focusing on the real issues that people care about,” said one. “In some ways similar to Trump’s populism.” “I feel like Trump and you are real,” said another.

Other users pointed to the Biden administration’s policies in Israel and Gaza and a desire for change – of any kind – at the top of the card, writing: “I wanted change, so I went with the rest of the vote Trump and Blue to put some brakes” on him.

The posts were the final entries in the Democrats’ post-election reckoning. Trump won all seven battleground states on his way to more than 300 electoral votes. He gained ground almost everywhere, including Ocasio-Cortez’s home state of New York, although Democrats in Congress still managed to blunt the red wave.

Not everyone liked the exercise. One answer to her question underscored Democrats’ fears about what should be a long-term political reclamation project.

“The comments you got make me want to puke,” the user said.

Ocasio-Cortez responded with a crying emoji, saying, “Sometimes you have to dig in and see it to understand and adapt! Even if it makes you want to puke.”

After her story went viral, she posted a few more questions, including issues such as the economy, Gaza, the border and “race and gender.” She also asked where Trump voters or Trump Democratic “split voters” got their news and media, including podcasts, during the election.

“Asking where you get your news is not asserting — or alleging — disinformation,” Ocasio-Cortez added, repeatedly saying she was not “condemning” the respondents.
