Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang loses $10 billion as company’s stock plummets

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s fortune fell by about $10 billion on Tuesday after shares of the AI chip leader fell nearly 10% amid a global sell-off.

Huang, the 61-year-old Taiwan-born manager who cleaned bathrooms and worked as a busboy at Denny’s before founding Nvidia more than 30 years ago, has seen his fortune shrink to $94.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Its wealth, which had risen by $51 billion this year alone, fell after the biggest one-day loss in Nvidia’s history, sending its market cap down by nearly $280 billion.

As of Tuesday, Nvidia’s market cap was $2.6 trillion, putting the company behind Apple ($3.35 trillion) and Microsoft ($3.02 trillion).

Nvidia shares plunged after Bloomberg News reported that the Justice Department had sent the company a subpoena as part of its ongoing investigation into alleged antitrust violations.

The Santa Clara, California-based company, which is notorious for its demanding work culture that sees employees work up to seven days a week, sometimes until 1 or 2 a.m., allegedly forced customers to pay penalties if they didn’t buy its chips exclusively.

The investigation focuses on whether Nvidia is charging its customers more for networking equipment if they want to buy AI chips from competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel.

Intel shares fell nearly 9% after Reuters reported that CEO Pat Gelsinger and key executives are expected to present a plan to the company’s board of directors to shed redundant units and restructure capital spending at the struggling chip maker.

According to Reuters, the Justice Department is taking the lead in investigating Nvidia as the agency divides oversight of Big Tech with the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC is led by Lina Khan, whose aggressive anti-monopoly efforts against big business have led industry giants, including media mogul Barry Diller and tech billionaire Reid Hoffman, to demand that Vice President Kamala Harris remove her from office if she wins the White House in 2024.

Nvidia, whose chips are used for both artificial intelligence and computer graphics, saw increased demand for its products after the release of the generative AI application ChatGPT.

The company’s business practices have prompted regulators in the US and Europe to investigate alleged monopolistic behavior.

The European Union, France and China have asked Nvidia for information about its graphics cards.

Government regulators are wary of Nvidia’s market dominance, which is built on companies’ reliance on the CUDA chip’s programming software. It’s the only system that’s 100% compatible with the graphics processing units (GPUs) that power gaming, content creation, AI and scientific research.
