Nvidia says it has not received a subpoena from the Justice Department

Key Points

  • Nvidia said the company has not been subpoenaed by U.S. regulators.
  • On Tuesday, reports said the chipmaker had received a subpoena from the Justice Department as part of an anti-monopoly investigation.
  • Shares of Nvidia fell again on Wednesday, continuing a recent decline that has undermined the stock’s recent upward trend.

Nvidia (NVDA), the maker of artificial intelligence (AI) chips, said Wednesday that it has not received a subpoena from the Justice Department. The statement came a day after reports that the government had contacted the company as part of a possible anti-monopoly investigation.

“We have reached out to the U.S. Department of Justice for assistance, but have not received a subpoena,” an Nvidia spokesperson said. Nevertheless, we are happy to answer any questions from regulators regarding our activities.”

The reported investigation added to the recent pressure on Nvidia shares. Shares closed down 1.6% today, extending Tuesday’s 9.5% decline that wiped about $279 billion off Nvidia’s market cap.

The latest decline comes after the chipmaker reported fiscal second-quarter results that beat analysts’ estimates but may have missed investors’ lofty growth expectations for the AI darling.

Despite recent weakness, Nvidia shares have more than doubled this year on rising demand for its AI chips.
