Connections is a word game launched by The New York Times in 2023 after the huge success of Wordleanother newspaper wordplay, devised by Welsh software developer Josh Wardle.

How to play connections

Each day, players are given a set of 16 words in a grid format. These words must be divided into four groups of four based on their shared themes and placed into categories. For example, in Monday’s puzzle, one of the categories was “Get red in the face,” and the words associated with that category were “blush,” “burn,” “flush,” and “glow.”

The categories are marked with a color: yellow is considered easy, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple, which is usually the most difficult.

Players begin by selecting words that they think go together based on shared themes or characteristics. Once four are selected, the player clicks “Submit.” If the answers are correct, they will be highlighted with the difficulty color and removed. If they are incorrect, they will be grayed out and remain on the board. You can then “Deselect All” and start over.

There is no time limit for the puzzle, but players are given four attempts to get it right, so bet wisely. There is also a “Shuffle” button for a fresh start if you get stuck.

If you haven’t solved the puzzle after four attempts, the answers will be announced.
