O-Zone Late Night, Week 9: Eagles 28, Jaguars 23

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – This one felt inevitable, but suddenly it wasn’t anymore.

The Jaguars lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, with the 28-23 scoreline being a bit bizarre – and once again very frustrating for a Jaguars team that continues to battle while continuing to fall short in critical moments.

This was a tough game for the Jaguars – and for the second week in a row, they almost overcame a slow, slow start. But for the second week in a row, a dramatic – and at least somewhat courageous – second-half effort fell short.

The Jaguars faced first-and-10 at the Eagles 13 just after the two-minute warning, trailing 28–23, but quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s pass into the end zone to running back D’Ernest Johnson was intercepted by linebacker Nakobe Dean.

The Jaguars are therefore 2-7, with three losses in the last five games. The schedule doesn’t get any easier, with games in the coming weeks against the Minnesota Vikings at home, the Detroit Lions on the road and the Houston Texans at home.

They’re all competing teams, and competing seems like a long time ago for the good guys. Sigh.

Well, what now? Are we going to rebuild again? No one can bring a spark. I really like Head Coach Doug Pederson, but something has to change.

There are eight games left in the 2024 regular season. The Jaguars are 2-7, so I’m not saying these questions aren’t fair. And if the season continues in this way, it is difficult to see changes in many areas not being considered. That’s the nature of the NFL. As for the specific nature of such changes… that’s a major storyline for the next eight weeks. Stay informed.

Is there time yet to make it to the play-offs? Do you think they can win the rest of the season?

There is time to make the play-offs. I don’t think the Jaguars will “win” the rest of the season.

Umm.. I just actually. Don’t know. I don’t even know what question to ask at this point.

It’s been that kind of season. The Jaguars have lost five games by five or fewer points, with all five losses decided in the final five minutes. That doesn’t mean they are good. Good teams win these kinds of games. It makes this season weird, baffling and very frustrating.

Jaguars do Jaguars things. Who is Trammell anyway?

Austin Trammell is a veteran wide receiver who was taken off the practice squad on Saturday and returned on Sunday. He fumbled the game’s first punt, which led directly to the Eagles’ first touchdown — a 20-yard pass from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to running back Saquon Barkley. This was Trammell’s first regular season game for the Jaguars, which makes your question understandable and the outcome of the game unfortunate. The Jaguars really needed to get off to a fast start and they really didn’t need to have crazy turnovers on Sunday. It was a tough way to start.

This team is fascinating. It’s like there’s a contagious disease in the locker room. Whose turn is it to make a game-changing mistake on this ride? And how will it happen? I now watch the matches without passion, but with a level of curious amusement. Interestingly enough, I think most Jags players view every game the same way.

It’s the NFL. Most games are close. The good big players figure out a way to win enough to make the postseason. The bad teams figure out a way to stay well under .500.

Why doesn’t Montaric Brown bring up Ronald Darby?

Because the coaches believe Darby is better at cornerback right now.

Imagine you want a Jaguars team that plays 4 quarters.

This is a valid and incredibly relevant thought. A slow start has become a prevalent and maddening trend defining the Jaguars’ season. The team has not scored an offensive first-drive touchdown in the past fourteen games, and the offense managed just one first down in the first half of Sunday. The Jaguars played well – and with fire and grit – in the second half on Sunday. They did the same last Sunday in the loss to the Green Bay Packers. But it’s tough to beat rival teams recovering from double-digit deficits. It’s just that way.

We win a lot of tosses, so we have that opportunity in front of us.

This was the much-discussed, sometimes gravity-defying, rarely whispered first email of the game. It seems like the Jaguars win a lot of toss, and on Sunday they won the toss too. Then things went wrong a little too quickly, so it didn’t seem that relevant. But the Jaguars are 2-7, so who am I to say what’s relevant?

One first down in the first half?

The Jaguars are great at making the simple things look incredibly difficult.

This applies to teams that lose.
