Why is Veterans Day celebrated on November 11?

The federal holiday on November 11 is associated with the end of World War I and marks the moment when Germany and the Allies signed an agreement to end wartime hostilities in 1918. The fighting stopped at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

At the time, November 11, 1918 was considered the end of “the war to end all wars,” according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first anniversary of Armistice Day to celebrate and observe the end of hostilities with parades, public gatherings, and a “brief suspension of the commencement of business.”
