Officials confirm details of shooting

LONDON, Kentucky (WYMT) – UPDATE: East Bernstadt Fire Department officials said the access road to Exit 49 remains closed until further notice.

UPDATE: Laurel County Sheriff John Root reported that officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting on I-75 at Exit 49, approximately eight miles north of London on the afternoon of September 7 at 5:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found nine vehicles had been shot at on both northbound and southbound I-75.

Five victims were seriously injured and transported to local hospitals. Other departments and a special response team secured the scene.

I-75 was closed for several hours during the investigation.

Officials have identified Joesph A. Couch, 32, of Woodbine, Kentucky, as a person of interest in the case.

The bank is considered armed and dangerous and must not be approached.

The crime scene is currently sealed off and the investigation will continue at sunrise Sunday morning.

Several agencies are cooperating with the investigation.

UPDATE: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that five people were killed in the shooting.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed that I-75 has reopened in both directions.

They are urging people to be cautious as Joseph Couch, the person in question, has not yet been found.

UPDATE: Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a person of interest in the shooting that occurred Saturday on I-75 near exit 49 and KY-909.

Officials say Joseph A. Couch, 32, is a suspect.

He is described as white, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds.

Couch is considered armed and dangerous.

Officials urge people not to approach him. If you have any information, contact the London-Laurel County 911 Center by calling 911 or 606-878-7000.

UPDATE: Gilbert Acciardo of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WYMT that there were multiple serious injuries, but no fatalities as of 8:08 p.m.

The shooter has still not been caught and residents are urged to stay indoors.

ORIGINAL STORY: City of London Mayor Randall Weddle confirmed to WYMT that a shooting is underway in London.

Officer Scottie Pennington of the Kentucky State Police Post 11 confirmed that the suspect has still not been captured.

Shots were fired on I-75 near exit 49.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that multiple people have been shot.

Les Dixon, media liaison for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 11, said I-75, KY 909 and US 25 in Laurel County are currently closed.

I-75 is closed from exit 41 to exit 59.
