Ohio AMBER Alert canceled after girl found safe, stepfather charged

A stepfather is facing kidnapping charges after allegedly trying to take a 13-year-old girl to another state.

The incident took place on South Huron Avenue in Columbus. Police issued an AMBER Alert after the girl did not return home from school.

Charging documents for 48-year-old Shane Smith said the girl’s father reported cameras showing the girl leaving the home just after 5 a.m. Her school bus wouldn’t arrive until around 6am. Her father contacted her school, who said she hadn’t brought that up.

Detectives wrote in charging documents that another student told the school counselor that the girl’s stepfather, Smith, would pick her up and take her to another state.

Smith now faces a kidnapping charge. More charges may be added later.

He also faces a felony assault charge from October 2023 and another charge from February 2024 for drug possession in Clark County.

Columbus police said the girl was found unharmed. They did not say whether Smith was taken into custody.

The suspect vehicle was found in Clark County. The sheriff’s office said a news release with information will be sent out.
