Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold discusses what’s next

Jackson Arnold’s first dive into a college football season as a starter wasn’t set up for success. His top four, then top five, then top six wide receivers through the 2024 season didn’t help for an inexperienced quarterback who played behind an inconsistent offensive line and battled injuries of his own all season.

Not a recipe for growth and development for a young quarterback. Nevertheless, Arnold did show growth in the second half of the season. It wasn’t perfect or even clean, as Arnold fumbled the ball late in the loss to Missouri. However, it was an improvement from the player who was benched as he turned the ball over three times in the first half against Tennessee.

So, while many are pondering Oklahoma’s future on the offensive side of the ball, Arnold isn’t ready to make any decisions yet. He just goes back to work.

“I’m going to take a break this week,” Arnold said after the game, via The Oklahoman, “and just relax and stay in the weight room, watch film about the last year and improve.”

As Oklahoma begins to prepare for their bowl destination and tries to stay ready, Arnold lets the chips fall where they may. But as things stand now, he envisions a scenario where he’s at the University of Oklahoma.

“Only God knows what will happen in the future,” Arnold said. ‘And I’m just going to meet the OC next week. See who we’re hiring and take it day by day. But there’s nothing that makes me want to leave, or makes me hesitate to stay here.”

As Brent Venables indicated in his post-game press conference, the Sooners will hire an offensive coordinator in the near future. At this point, it’s only a matter of time. And from there, we’ll find out the future of Oklahoma’s starting quarterback.
