OSU falls to 0-6 in the Big 12 after a 42-21 homecoming loss to Arizona State

The Oklahoma State Cowboys fell to 3-6, 0-6 in the Big 12 this season after Saturday’s 42-21 home game loss to Arizona State at Boone Pickens Stadium. The Cowboys are the only team in the Big 12 without a conference win. This is also the first time Oklahoma State has lost six games in a row under Mike Gundy.

After the game, head coach Mike Gundy met with the media to discuss what happened against the Sun Devils.

Mike GundyOklahoma State head coach…

Opening Statement:

“Defensively, we gave them chance after chance and couldn’t get off the field. In the second half, we couldn’t match anything offensively and we couldn’t match anything in the throwing game. We got four and a half yards per carry rushing, and “We only averaged three, which is always going to be a big factor unless there’s a significant difference in turnovers. If the other teams are rushing you one yard, five yards per carry, that’s going to be a tough day.”

… About possible areas for improvement for next week:

“We’ll be playing one next Saturday, and I expect the guys to fight it out in practice. They’ve been practicing well this past week. In my opinion, we need to be able to coach better. I’ll have to evaluate the video tonight.” I’m not so sure I agree with our plans. I don’t think it’s terrible, but there were some things that I didn’t really agree with that I probably could have done better from coaching, and we have to make some plays. Their quarterback made some good plays. In the second half we scored two goals. They caught us in a lot of man coverage and made us play big plays on us. We were a little desperate to try to get the ball back based on the clock, and that didn’t help us. So I wish we could have played better and I wish we could have coached better, but you have to move on to the next one.”

…On his team’s effort level:

“If you want to play the games, you play with a lot of effort. I think so. I think they did that until the end. Offensively they are still fighting. It didn’t look good, but they were on the fighting. She didn’t give up when (ASU) scored the last time. Special teams played until the end. So I thought that was better.

…On having a potential second-quarter touchdown taken off the board due to a late injury timeout:

“I guess if they knew there was an injured player, they usually don’t run over the ball. So I don’t know all the details of it, and I don’t know what that rule is because I don’t know that this is a strange situation , but if the ball is broken, the ball is broken. Period, we can’t go back.’

…On whether he would consider switching to a three-man front on defense:

“We’ve had some injuries in both places. So we don’t really have enough linebackers to do three downs (linemen), and we’re a little more in position to do four downs from a defensive line depth standpoint. than we are at the backer. Then you have to play against four linebackers for the most part… That’s also a good question, because it has already been asked on the other side of the table. But we’re rotating three guys at linebacker, so if anyone is going to go down now, you have to take it all, throw it away and go back to something else.”
