OU Football switches to backup QB Jackson Arnold during the game against South Carolina

Oklahoma football turned to backup quarterback Jackson Arnold during the first quarter of a home game against South Carolina on Saturday.

Arnold replaced true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr., who threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball on OU’s first three drives of the game. South Carolina capitalized by claiming a 21-0 lead with 9:24 on the clock.

Arnold is a former five-star player who began the season as OU’s starting quarterback, but the sophomore came to the bench for Hawkins during a Week 4 home loss to Tennessee. Saturday was Arnold’s fifth appearance of the season, meaning he has now lost the ability to redshirt.

Arnold entered the game this season with 538 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions on 61-for-102 passing (59.8%). He has also recorded 41 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
