Packers lose opening game to Eagles in Brazil, 34-29

Packers lead Eagles 6-0 after first quarter

Green Bay won the opener and elected to receive. Jordan Love, Kenny Clark and Matt Orzech were the captains.

Green Bay converted the first third down when Romeo Doubs picked up a pass low and ran it in for a gain of 19 yards to the Eagles’ 42-yard line.

On third-and-6, Love caught the Eagles with 12 men on the field and appeared to hit Jayden Reed for a 38-yard touchdown, but the play was called off as Green Bay also had 12 men on the field.

After a deep incomplete pass to Watson, the Packers looked to try it on fourth-and-6, but elected to punt after a false start penalty on right tackle Zach Tom. Daniel Whelan hit his punt into the coffin corner for 33 yards, pinning Philadelphia back at their own 10.

Eric Wilson tackled Saquon Barkley for a loss of five on the Eagles’ first play. After an incomplete pass, Jalen Hurts attempted to field a pass to DeVonta Smith, but Xavier McKinney intercepted the pass and returned it 16 yards to the Eagles’ 19-yard box.

Love was sacked on first down, but Jalen Carter was warned for unnecessary rough play, setting up a first-and-10 at Philadelphia’s 12-yard line. The Packers returned to the 22 after a holding penalty on Rasheed Walker.

A 9-yard screen to Josh Jacobs led to Brayden Narveson’s first NFL field goal from 31 yards. The rookie kicker connected on the goal to give the Packers a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes, 26 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Packers defense got the ball back to the offense, with Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt pushing the Eagles line back to force Hurts to take a broken snap. Wyatt recovered at the Philadelphia 13-yard line. It was the first time since 2007 that the Packers had two takeaways in the first quarter of a season opener (also against Philadelphia).

First-round pick Jordan Morgan began rotating at right guard on the third offensive series. Reed gained nine yards on a pass in the flat and then Love connected with Romeo Doubs for 10 yards on second-and-11 against an all-out pressure.

Jacobs lost two yards on a third-and-1 carry, but Love checked into a run on fourth-and-2 and Jacobs picked up the two yards and the first down.

Doubs was penalized for offensive pass interference on first-and-goal from the 3, pushing Green Bay back to the Eagles’ 13. Tucker Kraft was returned eight yards after leaking into the flat. After two incompletions, Narveson blasted a 23-yard field goal to extend Green Bay’s lead to 6-0 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.
