Padres’ Jurickson Profar tried to make a goodwill gesture with Dodgers fan moments before objects were thrown at him

A line was crossed by fans at Dodger Stadium during Game 2 of the NLDS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in the bottom of the seventh inning, and videos surfacing on social media of those in the stands show moments that preceded the now-infamous game slowdown.

Padres left fielder Jurickson Profar was seen fuming in the outfield after the FOX broadcast showed objects being thrown from the stands in his direction. Fans threw baseballs and beer cans at him, causing a complete stoppage of play as the Dodger Stadium announcer begged fans to stop throwing objects on the field.

But just before Profar yelled at the fans in the stands, he tried to make a gesture of goodwill with a fan in the short seats in left field by giving him a baseball.

It was the first of many thrown onto the field by fans in the wild scene during this postseason rivalry.

In a video posted to social media by a fan, Profar and the Dodgers fan, wearing a white and blue Los Angeles jersey, were seen talking to the Padres left fielder and everything seemed perfectly fine. Profar had a ball in his hand and it was clear that he was going to give it to the fan.

But once the fan got the ball, he immediately threw it toward third base, and the Dodgers faithful started cheering. However, fans who appeared to be right behind him shouted, “No!” as Profar waved off the removal of his souvenir before walking back to his spot.

For some context, Profar interacted with the fans in the left field seats earlier in the game when he robbed a home run from Mookie Betts. It appeared that it was exactly that fan in the front row that Profar was watching as he jumped up and down before showing the ball to Betts, who walked around the bases thinking he had struck it out.

Going back to the moment the fan threw the first ball onto the field, there was a security guard sitting right next to him against the wall, although none of that throw landed on the field. That would change, however, when the video showed another ball being thrown at Profar from a direction behind the camera’s owner.

At that point, Profar began to be fouled, as the left field umpire became involved with stadium security to find out who threw the ball at him.

As the boos rained down from the fans in left field, Profar can be seen jawing at them. And while it wasn’t seen on this video, another ball was thrown to Profar on the broadcast, leading to a delay in the game as Padres manager Mike Shildt came onto the field with his outfielder excited about what was happening.

Profar had to be calmed down by teammates, and after the inning, third baseman Manny Machado gathered everyone in the dugout to share the message to stay focused, which he revealed after the team’s dominant 10-2 victory to clinch the series to draw one match. each before returning to San Diego.

More videos will likely emerge from this point, which everyone hopes will be a one-off, because no one wants to see things between players and fans in the stands escalate to the point where the game has to be stopped.

This is a heated rivalry in the NL West, after all, and it doesn’t help that videos from the stands also showed Fernando Tatis Jr. taunted Dodgers fans until the end of the game, whether in the dugout or in center field.
