Patriots QB Drake Maye leaves game vs. Jets with concussions

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets due to a concussion.

The injury appeared to occur on a play late in the first quarter in which Maye had battled for an 18-yard gain. As Maye slid at the end of the run, Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood’s helmet made contact with Maye’s helmet during a tackle attempt.

Maye started slowly, but stayed in the game for the final four plays of the drive, which stretched into the second quarter. After the Patriots punted, Maye went to the sideline and initially sat on the bench before being taken to the medical tent for evaluation. He then walked to the locker room under his own power.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett, who started the first five games of the season for New England, took over for Maye.

“Just like I told the guys at the beginning of the game, it’s that ‘next man up’ mentality no matter what position you play. We need Jacoby to take us to the promised land,” said head coach Jerod Mayo during halftime against CBS.

The Patriots initially had Maye’s return listed as questionable.

Maye’s scrambling ability had helped the Patriots take a 7-0 lead as he raced 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

At the time he left the game, he had rushed three times for 46 yards and one touchdown and was 3 of 6 for 23 yards passing.
