Paul Mescal can’t stop wearing this perfect red carpet suit

Looking at Paul Mescal on the red carpet in front Gladiator II‘s Sydney premiere, you’d think the weather Down Under played a role in determining his fitness. After all, Australia is warming up for an extremely pleasant summer, which could explain his lighter suit color and open shirt collar. A certain degree of ventilation is necessary.

But you would only be half right. In fact, this particular suit has become something of a Mescal signature in recent months. There is something specific in it: a classic double-breasted silhouette, the jacket worn unbuttoned, the collar left open with a distinct lack of ties.

Mescal has worn this uniform repeatedly. At the Academy Museum gala earlier this month with a small Cartier; at the premiere of All of us strangers last year with a henley; at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards with nothing below; and at the BAFTAs – although we admit the collar was buttoned at the time. That means Mescal hasn’t worn a more traditional tuxedo since last year’s Oscars, all the way back in March 2023.

Now, in Sydney, for the first of several global ones Gladiator premieres, Mescal put everything in its place. This time it was a rust-colored three-button suit, worn – you guessed it – over a pale yellow tunic, with an open collar. A pair of shiny black boots, a gold framed watch and a very Aussie coded mullet completed the look.

It’s not just Paul Mescal who has loosened things up. Last week it seemed like almost every man on the Academy Museum Gala red carpet was openly rebelling against the tie, while at other events we’ve seen more suit color, shape and accessories than ever before. Will the red carpet become chill and wavy again? Do boys just have more fun, while the rules are less strict? Are people just looking for something new?

The jury may still be out. Who cares if Paul Mescal looks this good?
