Portland Trail Blazers vs. Memphis Grizzlies: match preview, prediction, time, TV channel

The Portland Trail Blazers return home after going 1-3 in a four-game trip to host the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night at the Moda Center.

The Grizzlies will be without star guards Ja Morant (hip) and Desmond Bane (right oblique). Guard Marcus Smart (ankle sprain) is questionable.

Still, the Grizzles (6-4) have a one-point lead over the Blazers (3-7).

Oh, the disrespect.

On the other hand, Memphis won 128-104 at home against Washington (2-5) on Friday without all three.

Forward Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 39 points against the Wizards and rookie center Zach Edey came off the bench to score 14 points with eight rebounds.

Speaking of the 7-foot-4 Edey, the Grizzlies selected him with the No. 9 pick in last June’s NBA draft, two picks after the Blazers selected 7-2 center Donovan Clingan.

Clingan and Connecticut defeated Edey and Purdue in last season’s NCAA men’s national championship game, 75-60.

Edey scored 37 points with 10 rebounds. Clingan, playing on the deeper team, scored 11 points with five rebounds.

Comparisons between the two will be made for years to come, especially if Edey proves to be more productive than Clingan.

So far this season, Clingan has played 13.6 minutes per game off the bench and is averaging 4.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. Edey has started nine of 10 games and is averaging 11.1 points with 6.7 rebounds in 19.3 minutes per game.

To be fair, Edey was drafted by a team in desperate need of a center while the Blazers already had Deandre Ayton as their starter.

Prediction: The Blazers have played relatively well this season, outside of upper-tier teams like Golden State, Phoenix and Minnesota.

The Grizzlies, without Morant and Bane, are not a top team.

After going 1-3 on the road, and with the Timberwolves on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday nights (sheesh), expect the Blazers to pull out all the stops for a win over Memphis and succeed.
