Possible heavy storms on Tuesday evening, but heavy rain and wind on Wednesday

BILLINGS — Showers and storms will begin Tuesday night and last into Wednesday evening, meaning heavy rain and widespread winds for some.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some of these storms could be severe, producing strong winds and hail.

Heavy rain and wind will hit us through Wednesday. There is a good chance of at least an inch of rain and some could see 2 inches over the mountains west of Billings.

The heaviest rainfall at lower elevations is expected north and northeast of Billings. Expect significantly less rain in the rest of the area.

Winds will routinely reach 40 to 60 mph across much of the area on Wednesday. Be careful when traveling in strong crosswinds and make sure all gear is secured.

Tonight, rain will change to sleet at the high elevations of the Crazy and Beartooth-Absaroka Mountains. A few inches of accumulation are expected above 9,500 feet tonight and Wednesday. Backcountry travel and recreation may be difficult, so prepare for winter conditions
