Sunday’s Nations League predictions

A disappointing Euro 2024 has been quickly forgotten by Italy, who are unbeaten in their first five Nations League matches and top a tough section ahead of France, Belgium and Israel.

The Azzurri crashed out of the last 16 this summer due to a flat performance in a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland, but Luciano Spalletti will now get a tune out of his side.

The former Napoli manager’s tactics may have been too contrasting with those of his predecessor Roberto Mancini for Italy to adapt in time for the European Championship, but now it’s all clicking.

Their Nations League campaign started with a 3-1 win in Paris and they will head into the reverse fixture with confidence after a 1-0 win in Belgium.

France, meanwhile, were held to a 0-0 draw on Thursday by the section’s cellar boys, Israel, and they could falter against Italy, who would probably have a perfect record had Lorenzo Pellegrini not been sent off when the Azzurri were 2-0 stood. against Belgium last month, with his dismissal leading to a 2-2 draw against the Red Devils.

With one match to go, there is plenty to play for in Group B3. Austria are top with ten points – the same as Norway in second place – but Slovenia know that a win in Vienna will see them leapfrog their hosts.

Knowing this, the usually cautious Matjaz Kek can opt for a more attacking approach in the Ernst Happel Stadium, which can increase Benjamin Sesko’s already decent chances of finding the net.

Sesko has impressed in the Champions League this season, scoring three goals in four games for RB Leipzig, and has been an even bigger star on the international stage, scoring five of Slovenia’s six goals in the Nations League.

Austria have managed just two clean sheets in their last 12 games and Sesko was able to continue his good form against a leaky defence.
