President Biden congratulates Trump in his first speech since Harris’s loss and promises a “peaceful” transfer of power

Here are the most high-profile candidates for top posts in Trump’s administration

After winning the 2024 presidential election, President-elect Donald Trump’s next big step is to fill his Cabinet with the right leaders who will strengthen his agenda over the next four years.

There are several rumored candidates for each position, but the following people are the most high-profile contenders for the top positions:

State Secretary

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who was a leading contender on Trump’s shortlist for vice president, has been proposed for the role of secretary of state.

Rubio currently serves as vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence and senior member of the Committee on Foreign Relations, leading several initiatives aimed at strengthening national security.

The senator from Florida did not rule out taking a position in government during an interview after the election.

“I am always interested in serving this country,” Rubio told CNN. “I have not had standing conversations with anyone in the Trump administration. Regardless, I intend to work with them, whether in the Senate, which is an important place, or in some other capacity.”

The name of Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., has also been floated as a possible Cabinet pick. Hagerty was a former ambassador to Japan under Trump and has pushed back on the Biden-Harris administration’s foreign policy.

Former Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien is also being considered for the role, Fox News Digital was told. Since leaving the Trump administration, he co-founded the international policy consultancy American Global Strategies.

Minister of Defense

Combat-decorated Green Beret Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., could be tapped to lead the U.S. defense agency.

Waltz, who previously served as CEO of defense contractor Metis Solutions and director of defense policy at the Pentagon under Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, serves on the House China Task Force and coordinates policy on China and works to reduce U.S. dependence on Chinese minerals.

Walz is chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness and a member of the Oversight and Accountability Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could return to lead the defense agency after serving during Trump’s first term.
