Sports Mole previews Friday’s Nations League match between Denmark and Spain, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Spain will bid to secure first place Group 4 of League A in the period 2024-2025 UEFA Nations League when they go Denmark on Friday evening for what looks to be an intriguing affair.

La Roja have already booked their position in the quarter-finals but are yet to claim top spot, while Denmark have not yet guaranteed their position in the last eight of the competition ahead of their final two matches.

Denmark have won two, drawn one and lost one of their four matches in Group 4 of League A, picking up seven points to move them into second place, three points above Serbia and three points above leaders Spain.

The Red and White started their 2024/25 Nations League season with back-to-back wins over Switzerland and Serbia, but were then beaten 1-0 in Spain before drawing 2-2 against Switzerland last time out.

Denmark will complete their group stage away to Serbia on November 18 and they are in pole position to finish second, but poor results in their final two matches could see them drop out of the top two.

This match will highlight Brian Riemer‘s first game in charge of Denmark, with the 46-year-old confirmed as the new manager on October 24, having previously been in charge of Anderlecht.

Denmark have won just two of their previous seventeen games against Spain, with their last success over Friday’s opponents proving to be a 1-0 win in a World Cup qualifier in March 1993.

Spain have won seven and drawn one of their last eight meetings with Denmark, including a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture last month, with Martin Zubimendi deciding the match in the 79th minute.

Luis de la Fuente‘s side top Group 4 of League A with 10 points, thanks to a record of three wins and one draw from four matches, and they have already progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition.

A draw would be enough to secure top spot on Friday, but a defeat would throw the group wide open, especially if Serbia also beat Switzerland that same evening.

Spain, who complete their group stages at home against Switzerland on November 18, are Nations League holders after triumphing during the 2022-2023 season, beating Croatia in the final.

La Roja also famously won Euro 2024, and they are unbeaten in all competitions since the friendly with Colombia in March, although the national side have not lost a competitive match since the European Championship qualifier against Scotland in March 2023.

Team news

New Denmark head coach Riemer has some big decisions to make when it comes to his team selection for this match, especially in the final third of the field.

Rasmus Hojlund has scored just twice for Man United this season, but the 21-year-old has scored seven goals in 20 appearances for his country and is expected to get the nod in the final third of the pitch. Kasper Dolberg And Yussuf Poulsen.

Hojlund’s club teammate Christian Eriksen is also back from a recent injury and should start, while there could easily be a fourth cap for the talented Patrick Dorgu as the left-sided full-back.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg must be accompanied by Morten Hjulmand in the middle of midfield, while that is probably the case Joachim Andersenwho has been in strong form for Fulham this season, is introduced into the back three.

As for Spain, Dad Torres has been forced to withdraw from the selection due to a muscle problem Unai Simon, Dani Carvajal, Rodri, Gavi And Lamine Yamal are notable absentees for the European champions.

Alvaro Morata was doubtful due to a head injury suffered while training with AC Milan, but the captain should start and he will bid to add to his 37 goals for his country.

Nico Williams And Dani Olmo are also lining up for spots in the final third of the field, while Pedro Porro is deployed as a right back.

Alex Grimaldo And Marc Cucurella will go head-to-head for the left-back role, while Aitor Paredes, Marc Casado And Samu Omorodion all hope to make their first appearance for the national team on Friday evening.

Possible starting line-up for Denmark:
Schmeichel; Andersen, Vestergaard, Nelsson; Bah, Hjulmand, Hojbjerg, Dorgu; Eriksen, Hojlund, Gronbaek

Possible starting line-up for Spain:
Raya; Porro, Vivian, Laporte, Cucurella; Zubimendi, Ruiz; Olmo, Pedri, N Williams; Morata

We say: Denmark 1-2 Spain

This is a tough match to call, especially as Spain were missing some key players, and it wouldn’t be a shock if Denmark got a positive result on Friday night. However, Spain have such quality in their forwards and we are backing De la Fuente’s side to battle their way to all three points in their penultimate group stage match.
