Previewing Nebraska high school football quarterfinals

Here’s everything you need to know about the Nebraska high school football playoffs from Stu Pospisil.

Class A

No. 7 Papillion-La Vista (7-3) at No. 2 Omaha Westside (10-0), 7 p.m.: Papio stayed with Westside for a half to close the regular season, but the Warriors’ winning streak has reached 30. Radio: none. Stu’s pick: Westside.

No. 4 Omaha North (8-2) vs. No. 5 Elkhorn South (9-1) at Elkhorn Stadium, 7 p.m.: Even with NU lineman pledge Tyson Terry out until wrestling season (knee), the Vikings have been hard for teams to run against. South QB Madden Riggs will have to have success throwing it. Radio: none. Stu’s pick: North.

No. 8 Bellevue West (7-3) at No. 3 Kearney (9-1), 7 p.m.: West’s defense has improved of late, but Kearney’s has been good except for when it met Millard South. Radio: 1340, 1460/92.1, Kearney. Stu’s pick: Kearney.

No. 6 Millard North (6-4) at No. 1 Millard South (9-1), 7 p.m.: South beat the Mustangs, when they were at full strength, 63-21 during the season. Not having NU pledge Pierce Mooberry (knee surgery) takes away two playmaking starter positions for Millard North. Radio: none. Stu’s pick: South.

Class B

No. 9 McCook (7-3) at No. 2 Bennington (9-1), 6 p.m.: The Badgers began their run of state titles with 2021’s 51-13 first-round win over McCook. Radio: 96.1, 93.9, McCook. Stu’s pick: Bennington.

No. 4 Elkhorn North (8-2) at No. 4 Scottsbluff (9-1), 8 p.m.: It’s the de facto return trip for North, which beat Scottsbluff 35-16 at home last year. North will be playing its first game on a grass field. Radio: 107.3, Minatare. Stu’s pick: Scottsbluff.

No. 6 Waverly (8-2) at No. 1 Omaha Skutt (9-1), 7 p.m.: Six times since 2008, Skutt has ended the Vikings’ season. The Dylan Van Dyke to Joe Kolega connection has produced record numbers for the receiver. Radio: 101.5/1240, Lincoln. Stu’s pick: Skutt.

No. 8 Gretna East (6-4) at No. 3 Seward (10-0), 7 p.m.: East went west to get its feet wet in the playoffs, the second-year school thumping Gering, while Seward survived a 21-20 game against Lincoln Pius X. Seward beat the Griffins 41-24 to open the season. Radio: 1370/95.9, York. Stu’s pick: Seward.

Class C-1

No. 8 Chadron (8-2) at No. 3 Sidney (10-0), 5 p.m.: Just two weeks removed from Sidney’s 14-0 win at Chadron, the teams go to Red Raider territory. Sidney has four shutouts,. Radio: 610, Chadron, 95.7/1340, Sidney. Stu’s pick: Sidney.

No. 6 Central City (9-1) at No. 4 Columbus Lakeview (10-0), 7 p.m.: To make it to their first semifinal since 1989, the Bison on offense – Parker Zikmund at QB and leading rusher Corbin Kyes — will have to solve Lakeview’s defense. Radio: 100.3, Central City. Stu’s pick: Lakeview.

No. 5 Boys Town (9-1) at No. 1 Wahoo (10-0), 7 p.m.: Wahoo has given up three touchdowns in its past seven games/ Boys Town’s Darien Whitaker committed to Kansas State on Oct. 28 Radio: none. Stu’s pick: Wahoo.

No. 7 Auburn (9-1) at No. 2 Ashland-Greenwood (9-1), 7 p.m.: Ashland beat the Bulldogs at home 41-13 on Sept. 20. Auburn has given up three touchdowns in its past six games. TV: NCN South. Radio: 101.3, Falls City. Stu’s pick: Ashland.

Class C-2

No. 7 Raymond Central (8-2) at No. 1 Norfolk Catholic (10-0), 6 p.m.: Norfolk Catholic has run its winning streak to 36 games, No. 2 all-time in C-2 and No. 6 in any 11-man class. Raymond Central has its turnaround season, making the quarters for the first time since 2000. Radio: Stu’s pick: Catholic.

No. 7 Kearney Catholic (8-2) at Wood River (9-1), 7 p.m.: The last time Wood River reached the semifinals, Scott Frost was quarterback in 1992. Kearney Catholic was that far in 2020 and 2021. Radio: 1460/92.1, 98.9, Kearney. Stu’s pick: Catholic.

No. 6 Malcolm (8-2) at No. 4 Battle Creek (8-2), 7 p.m.: Malcolm has lost in this round the past two years. Battle Creek could be in its third semifinal in four years, but the Braves haven’t been to Lincoln since the 1996 debut of final at Memorial Stadium. Radio: 106.7, Norfolk. Stu’s pick: Battle Creek.

No. 3 Hartington Cedar Catholic (8-2) at No. 2 Wahoo Neumann (9-1), 7 p.m.: Neumann’s average score in its nine-game winning streak, since opening with a one-score loss to Norfolk Catholic, is 54-9. Cedar must shift its defense from the Oakland-Craig passing attack to NU pledge Conor Booth, who has 47 touchdowns and 2,614 yards rushing. TV: NCN North. Eight Man-1

No. 4 Shelby-Rising City (9-1) at No. 2 Sandy Creek (10-0), 7 p.m.: SRC held the Cougars to a season low in points in a 28-6 road loss on Sept. 6. Radio: 101.1, Columbus; 1550/92.7, Hastings. Stu’s pick: Sandy Creek.

No. 7 Plainview (7-3) at No. 8 Nebraska City Lourdes (8-2), 6 p.m.: First meeting between the schools. Plainview quarterback Karter Lingenfelter has 32 touchdowns rushing and passing. Callen Schnitzer got Lourdes to its first quarterfinal with a scoring scramble with 22 seconds left at Dundy County-Stratton. Radio: 103.1, Auburn. Stu’s pick: Plainview.

No. 5 Summerland (9-1) at No. 6 Crofton (9-1), 6 p.m.: Summerland defeated visiting Crofton 32-28 on Sept. 6. Radio: 102.9, O’Neill. Stu’s pick: Summerland.

No. 3 North Platte St. Patrick’s (9-1) at No. 1 Stanton (10-0), 7 p.m.: First meeting since the 2004 Class C-2 final won by Stanton 21-6. Barrett Wilke is averaging 204 yards rushing for Stanton, which has pushed its winning streak to 23 games. Radio: 1240/106.1, North Platte, 97.5, Norfolk. Stu’s pick: Stanton.

Eight Man-2

No. 6 Howells-Dodge (8-2) at No. 3 Humphrey Archangels (10-0), 7 p.m.: The Defenders won 36-6 at home three weeks ago. Radio: 93.5, Columbus; 107.9, West Point. Stu’s pick: Archangels.

No. 7 Wynot (8-2) at No. 1 Central Valley (9-1), 6 p.m.: Wynot was in the state final last year, when Central Valley was tripped up in this round. Radio: 93.9/1060, Ord. Stu’s pick: Central Valley.

No. 5 Riverside (8-2) vs. No. 2 Sandhills/Thedford (10-0) at Thedford, 5 p.m.: Riverside visits the defending champion. S/T’s Kyle Cox produced nearly 500 yards of offense in the second round. Radio: 103.9, Ord. Stu’s pick: S/T.

No. 8 Overton (9-1) at No. 4 BDS (10-0) at Shickley, 5 p.m.: First quarterfinal for Overton since 2019, first for BDS in two years. Radio: 100.1/1580, Cozad. Stu’s pick: BDS.

Six Man

No. 1 Sumner-Eddyville-Miller (9-0) vs. No. 8 Diller-Odell (7-2) at Diller, 3 p.m.: In its first year of six man, Diller-Odell makes it to a quarterfinal against the defensing champion. Radio: 93.1, Lexington. Stu’s pick: SEM.

No. 7 Red Cloud (8-1) at No. 6 Garden County (9-0), 4 p.m. MST: Of these schools, Garden County (1978, 2002) is the one that has reached a semifinal. The Eagles’ Wilsie Lobner leads the class withy 217 points. Radio: 103.9, Superior. Stu’s pick: Red Cloud.

No. 4 Arthur County (8-1) at No. 3 Stuart (8-1), 5 p.m.: Sixth consecutive quarterfinal for Arthur. Stuart’s Kayde Ramm has 27 touchdown passes. Radio: 92.7, Ainsworth. Stu’s pick: Stuart.
