Previewing Nebraska high school state volleyball semifinals

Mike Patterson has everything you need to know about Friday’s semifinal matchups at the Nebraska high school state volleyball tournament.

Class A

North Court

No. 4-ranked Millard West (24-8) vs. No. 1 Papillion-La Vista South (32-5), 5 p.m.

Millard West took out defending champion Lincoln Southwest in the first round, prevailing in five sets. The Titans took care of Lincoln North Star in three sets in quest of their fourth title in six years. The Wildcats swept Papio South during the regular season.

No. 8 Grand Island (27-9) vs. No. 3 Elkhorn South (25-9), 7

The Islanders got a huge effort from hitter Tia Traudt in the first round en route to an upset of second-ranked Omaha Westside. Elkhorn South knocked out Fremont in three sets in the opening round. The teams did not play during the season.

Class B

South Court

No. 4-ranked Elkhorn North (28-10) vs. No. 2 Norris (36-1), 5 p.m.

The Wolves rolled to a first-round victory Wednesday, sweeping York out of the tourney. Norris also had little problem in its opener, knocking Lincoln Pius X out in three sets. The Titans posted a pair of wins over Elkhorn North during the season.

No. 3 Waverly (30-7) vs. No. 1 Omaha Skutt, 7

It took Waverly five sets to defeat Bennington during the regular season but just three to eliminate the Badgers on Wednesday. The nine-time defending champion SkyHawks had their hands full with upset-minded Gretna in the opening round but prevailed in five sets. The teams did not meet during the season.

Class C-1

North Court

No. 5-ranked Kearney Catholic (25-6) vs. No. 1 Minden (35-1), 1 p.m.

The Stars swept Battle Creek in the first round thanks in part to a foot fault called on a Bravettes serve late in the third set. Minden, the defending champion, avenged its only loss by sweeping Gothenburg on Wednesday. The Whippets defeated Kearney Catholic during the season.

No. 7 Pierce (28-5) vs. No. 6 Wahoo (26-7), 3

The Bluejays snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the first round against Milford, rallying late in the fifth set to knock out the Eagles. Wahoo rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win the next three sets and oust Columbus Scotus. The teams have not played.

Class C-2

South Court

No. 5-ranked Norfolk Catholic (29-4) vs. No. 1 Lincoln Lutheran (33-3), 1 p.m.

Norfolk Catholic had to battle Thursday night before eventually outlasting Yutan in five sets. The Warriors took little time eliminating Hastings St. Cecilia in three on Thursday night as three players had 10 kills.

No. 6 Johnson-Brock (28-6) vs. No. 4 Thayer Central (32-2), 3

The seventh-seeded Eagles pulled the upset of the day Thursday, eliminating second-ranked Oakland-Craig in five sets. Thayer Central dropped the second set but bounced back to oust Freeman in four. The teams have not played.

Class D-1

South Court

No. 6-ranked EMF (21-10) vs. No. 1 Southwest (34-0), 9 a.m.

Exeter-Milligan/Friend had no trouble taking out Cambridge in three sets in Thursday’s first round. The top-ranked Roughriders did the same to Diller-Odell, boosting their record to 34-0. The teams have not played.

No. 3 BDS (29-4) vs. No. 2 Superior (27-7), 11

Tourney regular Bruning-Davenport-Shickley ousted Howells-Dodge in three sets Thursday. The Wildcats had a much tougher match, needing five sets to rally past Hartington Cedar Catholic. The teams have played twice, with Superior prevailing both times.

Class D-2

North Court

No. 5-ranked Central Valley (28-6) vs. No. 3 Leyton (34-0), 9 a.m.

The Cougars, knocked out in the first round last year, bounced back to sweep Amherst on Thursday. Leyton kept its perfect record intact, rallying from an 0-2 deficit to defeat Meridian in five. The teams have not played.

No. 2 Shelton (30-3) vs. No. 1 Overton (28-5), 11

Shelton stretched its win streak to 10 with a sweep of fourth-ranked Stuart on Thursday. The Eagles, looking to repeat as champions after a runner-up finish in 2022, swept Wynot in the opening round. Overton lost to Shelton earlier this season.
