Questionable officiating Oregon Ducks vs. Maryland Terrapins: Pass interference call

The Oregon Ducks lead the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium, and the officiating team took a number of questionable penalties that extended the drive for the Maryland offense. The Ducks have 70 penalties so far. It was also a rough start for the special teams for the Ducks.

The Oregon Ducks took a 21-10 lead into halftime against the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Even with a double-digit lead at halftime, Ducks coach Dan Lanning was confident the Ducks can be much better in the second half. He spoke with Big Ten Network’s Brooke Fletcher after the first half.

“We can be much better. We’re not playing clean right now,” Lanning said. “According to our standard, we have a lot more in the tank with which we can now attack at half-time.”

The Ducks have been penalized for extending multiple Maryland drives. Lanning and the Ducks will look to start fresh in the second half.

“It’s a new quarter, it’s a new game right now,” Lanning said. “We have a chance to have the ball in the half, and we have a chance to be aggressive and take advantage of that.”

Oregon hasn’t had many setbacks lately, so learning how to bounce back from these mistakes could be a good thing in the future.

Ducks who make careless mistakes

On the opening drive of the game, the Ducks forced a Maryland three and out. While Maryland scored on fourth down, Oregon beat Maryland’s punt, giving the Terrapins automatic first down. Maryland ultimately drove for a field goal on that drive.

The Ducks had their own three and were out to start the game. Oregon had a bad kick off the side of punter Ross James’ foot and only traveled 32 yards.

Luckily for the Ducks, their defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out. On the punt, however, the Ducks muffed it and were fortunate to retain possession.

This wouldn’t be the last mistake Oregon would make. On Maryland’s only touchdown drive of the first half, the Ducks committed multiple drive-extending penalties. Oregon defensive back Tysheem Johnson committed some questionable defensive pass interference penalties to keep the drive going. A face mask was also worn on Ducks defensive lineman Derrick Harmon during a sack.
