With the 2024 General Election less than a week away, the San Juan County Elections Office is ready to help you get out and vote. The office will be open Saturday, November 2 and Sunday, November 3 from 9am to 4pm to assist with in-person registration, updating addresses, providing replacement ballots and more.

To register to vote in Washington State, you must:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • A resident of Washington State
  • At least 18 years old (if you are 16 or 17, you can sign up as a prospective voter and be automatically registered to vote when you are eligible)
  • Not excluded from voting rights by court order
  • Not currently serving a sentence of total confinement in prison under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections for a felony conviction in Washington
  • Not currently incarcerated on a federal or out-of-state conviction

You can register in person at the county elections office to vote in the November 5 general election until 8 p.m. on Election Day. The office is located in downtown Friday Harbor, across from the courthouse.

  • Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Saturday and Sunday, November 2 and 3: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m
  • Election Day: 8am – 8pm

Where to vote

Voters can return their ballot for free at an official mailbox or by post, using the pre-paid envelopes provided with each ballot. Ballots must be mailed and postmarked by November 5 or placed in an official Washington State mailbox or voting center before 8 p.m. that day.

Important notes:

  • Ballots come with prepaid postage and must be postmarked by November 5 or returned to an official polling place in Washington State by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Ballot drop off locations in San Juan County can be found here.
  • Official ballot boxes are locked and sealed with a numbered security seal. The official ballot boxes are emptied by a team of two San Juan County Election employees.
  • You can check the status of your mail-in ballot by logging into VoteWA.gov

Frequently asked questions about voting by mail

If mailed, the USPS recommends mailing one week before Election Day. If you are mailing your ballot on Election Day, have the post office hand stamp your ballot. San Juan County mail is delivered to Seattle and processed the next day.
