Rachel Maddow takes pay cut as MSNBC’s future is in jeopardy

MSNBC star Rachel Maddow is taking a $5 million pay cut amid growing uncertainty about the channel’s future. The ankle boot reported Thursday.

Maddow, who currently makes $30 million a year at the network, has renegotiated to $25 million a year for the next five years. A source at the network told the Daily Beast that the reported salary is “not accurate” but did not provide any other figure.

Comcast, the owner of NBCUniversal, plans to spin off several NBC channels, such as MSNBC and CNBC, into its own company. NBCUniversal Chairman Mark Lazarus is currently leading the effort, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, under the name SpinCo.

The channel is currently at a crossroads following the victory of newly elected President Donald Trump. According to Nielsen data, ratings were down 40 percent from this time last year, though executives are banking on viewership returning to 2016 levels once Trump’s administration begins.

Producers are also grappling with how to get conservative voices heard in the “only safe place for a liberal TV audience,” as one MSNBC insider put it.

“We were so Harris propaganda that viewers were shocked when she lost,” said an on-air pundit. “It turned into one giant circle jk and echo chamber. If MSNBC wants to serve its viewers, they can’t keep them in fantasy land.”

The network also plans to use her as a “secret weapon” on other shows when major news breaks.

Along with Maddow, MSNBC relies on at least three other personalities to keep viewers informed: Wallace, who Deadline: White Houseand those of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Morning Joewhich recently came under fire when the hosts traveled to Mar-a-Lago to break bread with Trump.
