Rain and snow falling in Colorado on Wednesday will give way to dry, frigid overnight temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

“Frost and freezing conditions are expected to kill unprotected sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor pipes,” NWS forecasters said in a freeze warning. “Take steps now to protect vulnerable plants from the cold and drain irrigation systems.”

Forecasters say temperatures in the Front Range, Urban Corridor and adjacent Plains are expected to drop to 70 degrees overnight.

Temperatures in Denver will peak around 39 degrees on Wednesday before dropping to 24 degrees overnight, forecasters said.

NWS forecasters said the Freeze Warning in the metro area includes Denver, Fort Collins, Boulder, western Denver suburbs, Castle Rock, Greeley and Byers. The alarm is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday.

According to NWS meteorologists, several Colorado mountains had already seen 18 inches of fresh snow from Tuesday’s storm system as of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. Lower mountain peaks and the foothills also received between 10 and 12 centimeters of snow.

Another 4 to 6 inches of snow could fall in Colorado’s mountains on Wednesday as the storm moves through, according to NWS forecasters.
