Rain, wind and snow in New England

Are you going out for Turkey Day this year? Be prepared to give yourself some extra time to reach your destination as an area of low pressure produces widespread precipitation across New England. This is what you need to know!

The leading edge of the precipitation shield will push into Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. Initially the activity is light and scattered.

The worst of the rainfall will end around 3pm, but it will take a few more hours for the showers to subside.

Precipitation accumulation from this system will be approximately 0.5-1.0 inches locally. There’s no doubt that Thanksgiving will be wet, but it should be manageable.

Heading north? It’s going to be a whole different ball game. Once you reach the higher elevations (approximately above 300 meters), the precipitation will turn to snow, making for slippery roads. Some of the mountainous regions of ME, NH and VT.

After Thanksgiving, there should be no weather issues affecting travel. High pressure will bring mostly sunny skies in the northeast. The only caveat is temperatures well below average in the forecast as the calendar shifts to December.
