Randy Smith: SEC race is a toss-up

We’ve been hearing for months that the presidential election is a flop. We can also say the same about the SEC football race. The last undefeated team in the league, Texas A&M, was soundly defeated by South Carolina on Saturday night, leaving a total of five league teams with one loss. Georgia, A&M, Tennessee, Texas and LSU all have one loss, while four others have just two. With only four weeks of the regular season remaining, it’s easy to see how it’s still a toss-up.

When the SEC expanded to 16 teams with Texas and Oklahoma, the decision was made to do away with divisional play and the championship game would be between the top two teams in the standings. It would be impossible to make a prediction on how that will happen since there are so many teams still alive and kicking. The good news is that these teams with just one loss will play each other in the coming weeks, eliminating most of those five. For example, Tennessee still has to play Georgia, Texas A&M still has to play Texas, LSU doesn’t have a one-loss team on their schedule, but they still have four tough conference games left, including this week’s SEC headliner against Alabama.

If I were a betting man, which I’m not, I’d say the winner of the Tennessee-Georgia game would face the winner of the Texas-Texas A&M game in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. But… there’s still a lot of football left and all the other teams I’ve mentioned can sneak in. The overall balance in the SEC this fall is astonishing. Who would have thought South Carolina would dismantle Texas A&M like it did on Saturday? Plus, who would have thought that Vanderbilt would be nationally ranked and have wins over both Alabama and Auburn?

As for Tennessee, no one is happy with the way they played, but they should be very happy with the wins. Maybe… the Vols haven’t reached their peak yet and their best football is ahead of them. This is a special team and this could be a very special season. But as we can easily see, there are a few other teams planning a special season as well. Time will tell.
