Recalled Costco butter: 80,000 pounds recalled due to unusual mislabeling

Nearly 80,000 pounds of butter sold at warehouse chain Costco is being recalled due to an undeclared allergen.

In October, the Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for 79,200 of Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC’s Kirkland Signature butter due to an undeclared allergen. The recall was reclassified as Class II on November 7 to indicate that the product “could create a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

The FDA lists salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter cream as an ingredient, but may not contain a “Contains Milk” allergy statement on the package.

The recall concerns:

  • Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter, 16 oz. four 4 oz. sticks, UPC 96619-38496
  • Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter, 16 oz. Four 4 oz. sticks, UPC 96619-38488

The products come with a “best buy” date between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025.

If you purchased Kirkland Signature butter on or before October 11 and it matches the recall information and you have a sensitivity or allergy to milk, you should throw it away or return it to Costco for a refund.
