Residents of Edgemere Avenue, Wah Ta Wah Park evacuated due to wildfires in Greenwood Lake

GREENWOOD LAKE – Residents of Edgemere Avenue and Wah Ta Wah Park in Greenwood Lake were voluntarily evacuated from their homes Saturday evening after the Jennings Creek/Sterling State Park wildfire crossed the line and threatened several homes.

“It’s something we’ve been preparing for and we’re following the steps of the plan we had in place,” Town of Warwick Supervisor Jesse Dwyer said. “The wind played a major role in the direction of the fire and some homes are in potential danger.”

Dwyer said homes are being evacuated from 32 Edgemere Avenue to Emerald Point. The Wah Ta Wah Park evacuations were announced about an hour after Edgemere. Residents are taken to a shelter at Greenwood Lake Middle School, located at 1247 Lakes Road. Pets are welcome in the shelter.

As of Saturday, the fire has burned about 5,201 acres and is 88 percent contained, but winds endangered homes on Edgemere Avenue and Wah Ta Wah Park. Police and ambulance units were available to assist residents in leaving the area.
