Ricky Pearsall, 23, a San Francisco 49 player, was shot and wounded during an attempted robbery in Union Square Saturday afternoon, a source confirmed to KTVU.

The shooting was initially reported as a traumatic injury by the San Francisco Fire Department, which responded to the scene at Geary Street and Grant Street.

The suspect is now in custody, a source confirmed to KTVU. A source confirmed to KTVU that Pearsall was shot in the chest.

Pearsall was a first-round draft pick of the 49ers, but he was unable to play in preseason games after suffering a shoulder injury. The shooting comes after Pearsall had just begun practicing with his team after recovering from the injury.

Video footage of the event shows police tape on the corner, along with a small group of bystanders.

Tweets about X started to pour in, both from players and the team. Several local leaders also tweeted that they were grateful that Pearsall was doing well.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed also went to X to confirm the arrest of the shooting suspect.

Mark Farrell, who is running for mayor of San Francisco, went to X to criticize his opponent following the shooting.

“Our city has suffered a tragic series of shootings: a Galileo High student shot while Breed was partying in Chicago, a young girl at Crocker-Amazon with life-threatening injuries, and now 49ers first round draft pick Ricky Pearsall has been struck by gunfire during an attempted robbery in Union Square. Enough is enough. If we want public safety in San Francisco, we need change at City Hall,” he wrote.
