Robert Lewandowski joins Lionel Messi in the elite Champions League club as he beats Cristiano Ronaldo to a milestone

Robert Lewandowski has followed in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo with his latest Champions League exploits.

The striker scored for Barcelona in their 3-0 home win against Brest on Tuesday night as they progressed to qualifying for the last 16.

Lewandowski’s goal was his 100th in the competition and saw him join two fellow legends at an exclusive club.

The 36-year-old found the back of the net in the tenth minute from the penalty spot at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys – his sixth in the Champions League this season.

Only he, Messi and Ronaldo are the only players to ever score a century of goals in the history of the European Cup and Champions League.

Ronaldo leads the overall rankings with 140 goals in spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

MORE ABOUT THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Messi is second with 129 goals, 120 of which came with Barcelona and the remaining eight with Paris Saint-Germain.

Lewandowski’s 100th Champions League goal has taken his total to 14 in the competition for his current club.

And he scored 15 in Europe in the closing stages of Barcelona’s clash with Brest to make it a night to remember for himself.

It is also his 125th appearance in UEFA’s elite tournament, with only Messi scoring a century of goals in fewer games (123).

Ronaldo achieved the same feat on his 137th appearance and it appears no other players will be joining the 100 club anytime soon.

Only former Lyon and Madrid striker Karim Benzema is closest with 90 goals in 152 games, but he now plays for Al Ittihad, the Saudi Pro League club.

Madrid and Schalke legend Raul completes the top five with a total of 71 goals in 142 appearances.

Lewandowski is the latest addition to the now three-man elite list of Champions League stars.

His competitive debut came for Borussia Dortmund in 2011, drawing 1-1 against Arsenal in the group stage.

He scored 17 goals in 28 appearances on the big stage for the club before signing for their German rivals Bayern Munich in 2014.

Lewandowski scored a further 69 goals during his 78 appearances there and won the Champions League title with them in 2020.

The Poland international has also scored an incredible 21 goals for the season with Barcelona so far.
