Roof of Tropicana Field, home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays, torn open by Hurricane Milton

When Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida on Wednesday evening, the damage has already been felt by a major sports team in the state.

Tropicana Field, home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays and a shelter for first responders before the hurricane made landfall, saw its roof shredded by Hurricane Milton’s destructive winds.

A video has gone viral on social media showing part of the dome’s roof completely open and flapping in the strong hurricane winds.

Fortunately, fire and rescue services are reporting no injuries as linemen and first responders responded to storm recovery efforts there, according to WFTS meteorologist Jason Adams.

Another video of the roof shows how much of it has been removed. The extent of the damage to the building is not yet known.

Before the hurricane made landfall, the Rays announced they were working with state and local emergency management partners to support debris removal efforts, using Tropicana Field space for lineman and first responders preparing for storm recovery.

However, the Rays made sure to mention that it would not be used as a shelter, and encouraged those in the St. Petersburg area to follow storm guidelines.

The field is known as “The Trop” and has been home to the Rays since the inaugural season in 1998, although the team was soon looking to upgrade its franchise with a brand new stadium.

In 2023, the team announced a deal with local politicians to build a new stadium, known as “Gas Plant Stadium”, near Tropicana Field for as much as $1.2 billion dollars. However, the St. Petersburg City Council blocked a proposal because half of the stadium’s financing would come from taxpayers’ money.

Ultimately, a proposal was approved by the St. Petersburg City Council and the Pinellas County Commission in July that includes massive improvements to the non-stadium area, including residential units, affordable housing, office/medical space, retail space and more.

However, construction on the new stadium has not yet begun and it is not expected to be used by the Rays until Opening Day 2028 once completed.

However, the Rays have a more pressing problem right now: The roof of their home was decimated the night Hurricane Milton’s destructive system hit Florida, adding to Hurricane Helene’s damage.
