Rui Hachimura reveals whether he thinks he can play in the season opener

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, keys to a successful season for the Los Angeles Lakers is staying healthy. While LeBron James and Anthony Davis both played in more than 70 games last season, forward Jarred Vanderbilt and guard Gabe Vincent, two of their best defensemen, missed almost the entire season.

Currently, Vanderbilt is still working his way back from offseason surgery on his feet, while frontcourt player Christian Wood is recovering from knee surgery he underwent at the end of the summer.

Striker Rui Hachimura played in 68 games last season, but suffered several ailments. Although he missed the Lakers’ final two preseason games due to a calf tightness, he says he’s ready to go for the team’s regular-season opener on Tuesday.

Hachimura could have a bigger role this season under new head coach JJ Redick. Redick wants him to crash the offensive boards and possibly shoot more three-pointers as well.

He will remain in LA’s starting lineup after largely coming off the bench in the first half of last season. In addition to his offensive skills, he has the ability to guard opposing big men effectively at times, taking a defensive burden off Davis while allowing Davis to play more like a free safety on that end of the floor.
