Ryan Seacrest Doesn’t Mention Pat Sajak in First ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Episode

The wheel keeps turning.

Legendary talk show host Pat Sajak, 77, left “Wheel of Fortune” after a run of more than four decades. Now Ryan Seacrest has taken over and started hosting the show himself. He forgot to mention his predecessor’s name.

Seacrest, 49, had his first episode on Monday, September 9, and was joined by the show’s longtime co-host Vanna White, 67, who has been with the show since 1982.

His debut was honored by announcer Jim Thornton during the show opener.

“And now for the first time together, here are the stars of our show, Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White!” Thornton said.

“I’m your host, Ryan Seacrest. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to be here with you tonight to continue this legacy of this incredible show with all of you. And of course, my dear friend Vanna White,” he said during his monologue.

“Thank you for the warm welcome,” he continued. “Hosting ‘Wheel of Fortune’ is a dream job. I’ve been a fan of this show since I was a kid, watching it with my family in Atlanta. And I know how special it is that ‘Wheel’ has been in your living rooms for 40 years. And I’m so grateful to have been invited. I also know that I have some very big shoes to fill. So let’s play ‘Wheel of Fortune.'”

It was hard to notice that Seacrest didn’t mention Sajak in the opening match, though he did indicate he had big shoes to fill.

White recently spoke about her chemistry with Seacrest and her biggest fear about having a new co-host.

“I’ve known Ryan for about 20 years,” White said. “But over the last few months, we’ve been traveling together for the show and getting to know each other a little bit better.”

She added that she thinks their “chemistry” is good, but “I had no idea what to expect when I’ve been used to one person for so long.”

“I was very scared,” she admitted, “but he’s doing great.”

Last year, Sajak announced his retirement after 41 seasons. His final episode aired in June, in which he gave an emotional speech praising White.

“To my professional significant other. We’ve seen a lot of changes in our lives over the years, but we’ve always been there for each other,” he said at the time. “While I’ll miss working with her dearly, I take comfort in the fact that we live about five miles apart. So we’ll see a lot of each other.”

After leaving, Sajak won his first Emmy in 26 years, taking home the award for Outstanding Game Show Host at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Seacrest paid tribute to his predecessor on social media at the time.

“Pat, congratulations on your incredible run with Wheel of Fortune!” he wrote via Instagram.

“Your dedication, charm and humor have made the show a beloved part of American television for decades. Your partnership with Vanna is nothing short of iconic, and together you have created countless wonderful memories for viewers.”

Seacrest told “Good Morning America” he watched “countless episodes” to prepare.

Additionally, he played “fake ‘Wheel of Fortune’ games in many cities across America,” even “at conference tables, in boardrooms,” and with “makeshift wheels and makeshift participants for months” to get into the flow of the show.

“Pat and Vanna both said to me when I first got here, the best part is you meet three new people every night,” Seacrest recalled. “And they leave with money!”

On September 5, White told Variety of her new co-host, “He’s got a tough job. He’s practiced and practiced and practiced and done everything he can to get it right. And he’s accomplished that.”

Seacrest told the outlet that hosting “Wheel of Fortune” is a “full circle” for him, as series creator Merv Griffin gave him one of his breakout roles in the 1990s when he asked him to host the teen game show “Click.”

Seacrest recalls talking to Griffin about “Wheel of Fortune” at the time. “He told me it’s something that can last forever because it’s a simple show that people love to be on. You can have a busy, stressful, hectic day and sit down and take your mind off of everything. He said that’s the most important ingredient,” he said.

“At no point during that conversation did I think I would get the opportunity to be a host.”

Seacrest recalled that when he stopped by the studio to observe Sajak and White after he landed the job, Sajak told him, “Vanna is the best to work with. It’s the best show on TV. You’re just going to walk people through a game while they win money. There’s not much to think about.”

The former “Live with Kelly and Ryan” host also promised he wouldn’t make any drastic changes.

“Don’t change it, don’t touch it. This show works,” Seacrest said.

“All I have to do is keep it moving, and all we have to do is have fun every night. If that happens, I think this show will go on for a long time.”
