The New Orleans Saints will take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in Inglewood, with the road team hoping to end a five-game losing streak. You can follow along here for the score and live updates.

This is the first time the Saints and Chargers have played each other since Oct. 12, 2020, when New Orleans earned a 30-27 win in overtime at the Superdome.

The Saints will once again go with Spencer Rattler at quarterback while Derek Carr is still trying to return from an oblique injury. This will be Rattler’s third straight start.

UPDATED, 3:33 p.m.: Oh my. Dissly had a chance for a huge gain, and Herbert stepped into the pocket and put the ball right on his hands, and Dissly dropped it. If he had figured that out, he would have plenty of room to run.

So the Saints get away with it and then take advantage of a safety blitz with Ugo Amadi (!) to drop Herbert and force another punt.

Snap and punt are fine this time. Saints will take over at about their own 15th birthday.

UPDATE, 3:30 PM: Chargers finally get a first down with a pass from Justin Herbert to Will Dissly on second-and-8, and Herbert follows it up with 14 yards to rookie receiver Ladd McConkey.

LA doesn’t have many household names at the skill positions, and McConkey, who was questionable all week, is crucial for them now that he can play.

Taysom Hill may not have played defense, but he simply forced a safety. A botched punt by the Chargers puts the Saints on the board. Hill knocked the ball out of the end zone when he couldn’t recover it for a TD.

UPDATED, 3:25 p.m.: Jermaine Jackson and Kendre Miller nearly botched the Chargers’ free kick after the safety, but Jackson is able to bounce off Miller and make the catch and get a nice return to the 34.

A holding call immediately puts the Saints on second-and-long, and although Rattler regains 14 yards on a pass to Hill, he is incomplete after rolling out on third down, and the Saints will have to punt again.

Many expected a defensive battle. Halfway through the first quarter it is 2-0.

UPDATED, 3:21 p.m.: Well, the decision pays off with another three-and-out, although we’ll see what the Saints’ field position will be. Justin Herbert almost fumbled on that third-down play, but he could barely move his arm forward when he was hit by Alontae Taylor.

Wait, forget field position – Chargers punter JK Scott can’t handle a wide punt snap, and the ball is knocked around in the end zone, resulting in a safety for the Saints!

It’s 2-0 with 10:20 to go, and you can hear over the TV that there are plenty of Saints fans in LA

UPDATED, 3:13 p.m.: The Saints’ ground celebration stalls on a third-and-1 from just beyond midfield, where Kamara is connected.

You’d think it would be a day where Dennis Allen would throw some caution to the wind, but he’s going to kick from the +48.

Matthew Hayball’s punt bounces into the 10… and hits the pylon! Bad break there, and only a 28-yard net on the kick. I don’t like that decision by Allen.

UPDATED, 3:10 p.m.: It’s already been a wild day in the NFL, with the Dolphins losing to the Cardinals and the Ravens on the ropes against the Browns, so maybe that’s a good sign for the Saints.

What is certainly a good sign is a three-and-out for the New Orleans defense on the Chargers’ first drive. It’s Jermaine Jackson returning the punt, and he has some space, but doesn’t get much.

Spencer Rattler and the Saints start on their own 21. We’ll see how the offense looks with the offensive line reinforcements.

Another very good sign: Alvin Kamara gets behind a Taysom Hill block and picks up 23 yards, the longest run of the season for the Saints so far.

UPDATED, 2:04 p.m.: Welcome to the Week 8 edition of the New Orleans Saints live blog here on NOLA.com. I’m Times-Picayune deputy sports editor Zach Ewing, here to give you a little play-by-play and a lot of analysis and reaction from the Saints’ game at the Los Angeles Chargers today.

It’s Spencer Rattler’s third game for the Saints, who hope to get quarterback Derek Carr back from an oblique injury for next Sunday’s game at Carolina.

In the meantime, New Orleans could desperately use a win here, not only to snap a demoralizing five-game losing skid after two big wins to open the season, but also because the NFC South is still up for grabs. The Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently play in Tampa; the winner has a 2.5 game lead over the Saints, and the loser has a 1.5 game lead.

Yes, that’s right: The Saints still have a chance to make a playoff run, especially with a soft second half of the schedule, but they have to start winning. And a Rattler win today would be just what you need.

Carr is one of the inactive of the Saints; another is wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who the Saints signed this week but apparently isn’t ready to play live yet.

Perhaps even more notable is who isn’t on the inactive report: The Saints get Chris Olave, Taysom Hill, Cesar Ruiz and Pete Werner back today after a multi-week absence, and Marshon Lattimore, who was injured in last week’s game against the Broncos, is also good to go.
